Only 6 support the idea, while 9 percent said they were undecided.
The survey, conducted by Verian for Danish publication Berlingske and Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq asked respondents if they “want Greenland to leave the Danish kingdom and instead become part of the United States”.
The poll comes as US President Donald Trump intensifies his interest in acquiring the territory. Trump has claimed Greenlanders “want to be with” the US.
The survey was conducted between January 22nd and 26th based on online interviews with 497 representatively selected Greenlandic residents aged 18 and over. The territory has a population of around 55,000. The survey carries a statistical uncertainty of 3.1 percent according to Berlingske.
Greenland’s premier Múte Egede last week reiterated that Greenland does not want to become American.
Asked for comment on the poll by Berlingske, Danish PM Mette Frederiksen repeated her stance that the future of Greenland, including potential independence, can only be decided by Greenland.
“That aside, I’m pleased if the poll reflects that many Greenlanders see the value in continuing close cooperation with Denmark—likely in a different form than what we know today, as everything evolves over time,” she said.
Frederiksen said on Tuesday that there is no military threat to either Greenland or Denmark despite Trump's threats to take over the territory.
"I have no reason to believe that there is a military threat to Greenland or Denmark," Frederiksen told Danish media before a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels.
That meeting followed talks earlier in the day in Berlin and Paris.
Following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, the Danish head of government told reporters she had received "a great deal of support".
"This is a very, very clear message... that of course there must be respect for territory and the sovereignty of states," Frederiksen said.
The Danish PM spent the day meeting European leaders to gather support following Trump's claim at the weekend that the United States would "get Greenland".
