The Local’s role for international residents in Denmark has become more important than ever, but it’s increasingly difficult to survive in a media landscape dominated by big global tech companies and AI.

As editor of The Local Denmark, my job is to fight your corner, get answers from authorities and bring you the news and information you need to feel at home in Denmark.

In recent months we’ve dedicated our energy to highlighting the impact of the freeze on Danish citizenship applications as well as explaining the changes to work permit rules.

But as 2027 approaches, The Local is really up against it.

The dominance of global tech giants is making it harder and harder for us to survive.

We produce more valuable journalism than ever, but adverse algorithms and the dominance of AI for web searches, as well as the rise in sites using AI to generate articles, mean fewer people get to see our work.

For smaller news sites like ours, visibility is everything. Without it, we struggle.

But our readers can help.

If you like The Local and appreciate our reporting from Denmark, please consider becoming a member today - you can take advantage of our half-price introductory offer. By joining you’ll unlock every article produced by our team, see fewer ads and get access to member-only newsletters.

Alternatively, if you’re not quite ready to become a member yet, please consider making a donation.

Your contribution will allow us to update you on how the policies of the new Danish government will impact the lives of foreign residents and explain all the coming changes in Denmark.

Thank you for supporting The Local.
