Why normal sunglasses aren’t enough
Even though the light feels weaker, the sun’s rays can still badly damage your eyes. Normal sunglasses, toned glass, or homemade solutions aren’t designed to filter the dangerous light. Layering multiple pairs of sunglasses on top of one another also won’t do the trick.
It’s therefore very important that you buy the right glasses, especially for tomorrow’s eclipse, which is only a partial eclipse, meaning that the sun will still be partly visible.
Children at higher risk
In particular children are at high risk of damaging their eyes. If you’re planning on taking a trip with the family to watch the eclipse, make sure to talk about the importance of wearing glasses beforehand.
What should I be looking out for?
- Your glasses should be marked with ISO 12312-2.
- Check your glasses for scratches, cracks or holes before using them.
- Keep the glasses on at all times when looking at the sun.
- Never look directly at the sun through a camera, a pair of binoculars or a telescope without a special sun filter. Not only can it seriously damage your eyesight, it can also badly damage the sensor on your camera.
Where can you still get your hands on a pair?
As it’s now too late to place an order online, you’ll need to find a physical store to buy your glasses in. Although some stores may be sold out, the chains below are likely to have what you need.
Bilka
Bilka has glasses for 25kr a pair. Check the stock in your closest shop on their website.
Fætter BR
The chain of toy shops has protective eyewear in stock for 25kr a piece. Check the stock in your local shop online before heading out.
Føtex
Another supermarket chain which sells the glasses is Føtex, where you can find them for 25kr a pair. Their website allows you to check the stock in your closest store.
Normal
The glasses at Normal go for just 10kr. Although these are probably the cheapest ones you will find at such short notice, there’s no way of checking stock levels in each individual shop beforehand.
Kvickly
In some parts of the country, the supermarket chain, Kvickly, is also reported to be selling the glasses. Here they also go for 25kr.
Libraries
Some parts of the country have reported handing out glasses for free. This doesn’t seem to be the case in Copenhagen, but libraries in Odense, Aarhus, Solrød, Furesø, Rønne, Nexø, and many more have shared information about free protective glasses on their Facebook pages. Check your local library’s Facebook-page for more information.
Events
Several events have been planned country-wide, with many of them providing free glasses. See our full list here.
