The company said in a statement there had been "unauthorised access to a limited number of internal IT systems" and "certain non-public data" had been leaked.
Novo Nordisk said some of its internal IT systems had been taken offline but added: "Our core business operations are not impacted and remain up and running".
The company later said that the incident had "affected a limited amount of information related to patients participating in some of our clinical trials".
This data included information on trial participation, sex, age, biomarkers, health and immunogenicity data
and lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol use, and BMI, but did not include patient's names.
"We therefore do not consider the incident to enable any third party to identify participants in our clinical trials," the company said in a press release. "There is no need for our patients to take any specific action as a result of the incident."
