Roads
The Danish Road Directorate warned in its Easter traffic forecast of heavy traffic starting on Friday last week.
Traffic is also expected to be heavier than usual today, April 2nd (Maundy Thursday), when people will be travelling out for Easter Saturday itself, with most of the traffic heading out of Copenhagen, to and across Funen, and then into Jutland.
The directorate expects heavy traffic on road number 11 between Ribe and Ringkøbing, road number 16 towards Hillerød and road number 21 towards Sjællands Odde, from where the ferry goes to Aarhus.
It also warns of delays on the E45 between Vejle and Aarhus and the E20, both in the western part in Funen, around Kolding and on the Vestmotervejen across Sjælland.
You can keep up to date on the traffic situation by checking Trafikinfo.dk or by tuning into the P4 Trafik radio while driving.
Bridges
Sund & Bælt, which operates the Great Belt and Øresund bridges, also usually sees an increase in traffic over the Easter weekend. Expect longer queues than normal at the Great Belt Bridge tolls heading towards Funen and Jutland on April 2nd, and back towards Sjælland on April 5th and 6th.
To avoid the queues, you can set up automatic numberplate payment on the brobizz website.
Rail
Easter is a common time for engineering works to be carried out, as there are often fewer travellers than usual on the Danish trains.
If you’re travelling between Odense and Fredericia over Easter then be prepared that you will have to switch to a rail replacement bus, as these will replace all trains between Middelfart and Odense until April 6th.
There will be some regional trains between Middelfart and Fredericia, but everyone else travelling between Odense and Fredericia will need to take a rail replacement bus.
If you’re staying in Copenhagen over Easter, be aware that there will be no S trains between Østerport and Ryparken/Hellerup, with rail replacement buses running between Nordhavn and Ryparken, and Nordhavn and Hellerup.
If you want to travel between Nordhavn and Østerport you’ll have to take the metro instead – remember that you will have to pay extra for a metro addition to your train ticket. Be aware that you will not be allowed to take your bike on the rail replacement bus.
Air
This year, there are no strikes directly affecting airports or airlines in Denmark, but industrial action in Spain and ETA issues in the UK might affect Easter travel if you are venturing abroad.
Planned ground staff strikes in Spain were cancelled for the weekend of March 28th-29th, but may still go ahead Easter weekend if no deal is reached.
Any Brits ‒ dual citizens or not ‒ should also be aware that new ETA travel rules to the UK mean that you could be barred from entering the country if you don't have a valid UK passport.
