Passengers in Aarhus will be able to take more frequent light rail departures to the outlying towns Grenaa and Odder from June 29th, operator Midttrafik said in a press statement on Monday.
The additional services will connect the city to Grenaa and Odder more frequently during evenings and weekends, Midttrafik states.
This will “make Letbanen a more attractive transport option for leisure and culture activities,” the company said in the statement.
The decision comes after Letbanen recorded a growth in passenger footfall with its highest ever annual total last year, it said.
Some 6.3 million more passengers used the light rail services last year than ever recorded previously on the rail, which opened in late 2017.
New evening and weekend on the rail’s L1 and L2 services – meaning connections to Odder and Grenaa at the southern and northern end of the line respectively – will help meet the rising demand from passengers, said Henrik Juul Vestergaard, head of planning, consultancy and flexible transport at Midttrafik.
“We need to continuously adapt public transport to meet the needs and wishes of our passengers,” Vestergaard said in the statement.
“The new evening and weekend departures make the light rail a more attractive alternative to driving for passengers who’ve discovered the benefits of going car-free when attending social events,” he said.
Specifically, the changes mean that line L1 from Aarhus to Grenaa will increase to two departures per hour from Monday to Thursday until 10pm, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
Line L2 will also run two departures per hour from Monday to Thursday until 10pm, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays between Aarhus and Odder.
The new timetables take effect on June 29th and can be found in the Midttrafik website and in the Rejseplanen app.
