In addition to public figures, topics like the US election and the Paris Olympics dominated Danes' Google searches in 2024.
Pop superstar Taylor Swift and disgraced Danish entertainer Martin Brygmann have in common frequent appearances in Google searches in Denmark this year.
According to Google’s annual report on the year’s top searches, Swift and Brygmann are the two most searched-for individuals by Danes in 2024.
Swift secured the top spot – as she did in 2023 – with Martin Brygmann taking second place.
The remaining top ten searched names in Denmark are a mixture of international and domestic names.
The former group includes both candidates in the US presidential election, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris as well as Liam Payne, the former One Direction singer who died in October age 31.
The most searched-for Danish figures after Brygmann were politician Søren Pape Poulsen, who died in March after suffering a brain haemorrhage; influencer Katherine Diez; Queen Margrethe; veteran singer Johnny Madsen, who died in November; and handball player Mikkel Hansen.
“There’s a direct connection between the year’s Google searches and events that resonate with the population,” Jesper Vangkilde, communications manager with Google in Denmark, said in a press release, reported by newswire Ritzau.
Danes were particularly keen Google users when it came to searching information about elections, politics, and democracy, Donald Trump, Kamala Harris, Donald Trump, Kamala Harris, Vangkilde said.
“It’s positive to see Danes’ interest in politics and democracy interest is thriving, from the global stage of the US presidential election to local elections for Danish parish councils,” he said.
The “How do you vote in parish council elections?” and “How is the US election going?” both ranked among the top ten fastest-rising “how” questions, meaning they are among the search terms that saw their usage increase the most in 2024 compared to 2023.
The most searched terms on Danish Google are consistently navigational queries like “Facebook”, “YouTube”, “BT” (a Danish newspaper), and “EB” (short for Ekstra Bladet, another newspaper).
This year saw “EM” (European Championships) become the fastest-rising search. In addition to the UEFA men’s football Euros which took place in the summer, there is also an ongoing women’s European championships in handball, a popular sport in Denmark.
In addition to being the most-searched Dane, Martin Brygmann also claimed second place among high-risers.
The singer and entertainer received intense media attention earlier this year after women from the Danish music industry came forward to share experiences of sexual harassment from a prominent, unnamed musician, which was later to be Brygmann.
