Two new choices top this year’s list of the most popular names given to newborn boys and girls.

The most popular names given to babies in Denmark last year were Frida and Carl, for girls and boys respectively.

Each year, Statistics Denmark publishes a list of the most popular – in other words, the most commonly chosen – names for newborn girls and boys. Here’s the list from 2023 (the statistics are based on data from the prior year).

The latest list shows two new names as the most popular with Frida and Carl chosen most frequently by parents of new babies, taking over from Ella and William.

It is not uncommon for the most popular names to be unchanged, but this year sees both Frida and Carl in the number 1 spot for the first time.

There are four other new names on the list, including Solveig and Sofie for girls and Kalle and Leo for boys. Each of these names are in the top 50, having not been included last year.

They replace Milas, Vilhelm, Johanne and Emilie, which drop out of the top 50.

While Frida and Carl are top of the list for Denmark as a whole, a regional breakdown reveals different preferences.

Carl is only top of the regional list in Copenhagen, while this is the case for Frida in East Jutland and West Jutland, Statistics Denmark said in a press release.

The images below show the top 50 names for girls and boys given nationally across Denmark in 2023.
