Germany has recently agreed deals around labour migration with Kenya, India, Georgia and Morocco, German newswire dpa has reported.
Rasmussen has previously advocated for more skilled foreign labour in Denmark and has previously called for an agreement with African countries to this purpose, specifically naming Kenya.
The government announced earlier this year a “green mobility” deal with India that would see more healthcare sector staff from India arriving in Denmark.
“We must fight illegal migration. And we must attract foreign labour so that we are able to future-proof our social welfare model. In some cases, the two things are connected,” Rasmussen told newspaper Berlingske in a written comment.
The deal between Germany and Kenya involves more favourable rules for Kenyans who apply for work permits in Germany. In return, Kenya will be bound by rules requiring it to accept the return of its own nationals who are not legally resident in Germany.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is currently in Central Asia where he is expected to announce a labour deal with Uzbekistan.
“I’ll follow that with great interest,” Rasmussen said to Berlingske.
The German deals are part of the Berlin government’s immigration policy. The country has a commissioner for immigration specifically focused on the labour migration agreements. The commissioner reports to the German Interior Ministry.
According to dpa, some 225,000 migrants in Germany have been told to leave because the do not have residency rights.
