PostNord is halting all mail deliveries to China from Sweden and Denmark, the post operator announced on Tuesday.

In statements posted on both its Danish and Swedish websites, PostNord said that it was no longer accepting deliveries to China.

"Due to the outbreak of coronavirus, many airlines have cancelled their flights to China. It will therefore not be possible at the current time to send mail to China with PostNord," the Danish version of the statement reads.

It is "currently not possible to say" when the situation will return to normal, added the company, which is co-owned by both countries.

Deliveries from China to Denmark are subject to "large delays", meanwhile.

A similar statement on PostNord's Swedish website also cites limited transport capacity as a reason for the freeze on post to China, adding that "post which has (already) been sent (to China) since the outbreak of the virus will be heavily delayed". That is because postal services in China are no longer taking items to addresses for delivery.

Customers can check for updates to the situation via both websites.

The death toll from the new coronavirus outbreak, which originated in Chinese city Wuhan in December, has now passed 1,000 with over 42,000 people infected in the country.
