Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed her Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar to the Danish capital on Friday by showing him the city on two wheels.

Frederiksen and Varadkar were photographed pushing off from Christiansborg, the seat of the Danish parliament, on Friday as part of publicity for the meeting.

Both wore inflatable bicycle helmets, rather than the traditional type.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming Ireland’s prime minister to Denmark,” Frederiksen said in a press statement prior to the meeting.

“In less than a month, the United Kingdom is scheduled to leave the EU. It is clear that Brexit is a matter of importance – not least for Ireland – and I’m therefore looking forward to discussing the situation with my Irish colleague,” she said.

“But there are also other important subjects on the agenda, requiring our full attention. That includes the climate challenge, and we will talk about how we can work together to solve this enormous task we are facing,” she added in the statement.
