SAS cancelled all of its flights from Scandinavia to New York on Tuesday on the grounds of the blizzard conditions, impacting routes from Stockholm as well as Copenhagen and Oslo.

Norwegian meanwhile, which also flies routes from Scandinavia to the US, has opted to wait and see for the time being.

"We haven't cancelled any flights just now, but the best idea is to follow Norwegian's website and check with your airport where you can find the latest information," Norwegian press spokesperson Charlotte Holmbergh Jacobsson told The Local.

Meteorologists have predicted as much as 50cm worth of snowfall in New York City between Monday and Tuesday evening, while there are also warnings for severe winds.

Thousands of flights to and from the American east coast have already been cancelled since Monday.
