Lucasfilm announced over the weekend that Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen, best known internationally for his roles in the TV series Hannibal and the James Bond film Casino Royale, will star in the upcoming film ’Star Wars: Rogue One’.

The film is not to be confused with the highly-anticipated ’Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, which continues the original trilogy with familiar characters like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo.

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ is the first film in a standalone series that is set before the original trilogy.

“Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” producer Kathleen Kennedy said on StarWars.com. “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know.

Mikkelsen’s role in the film was announced as part of a cast reveal that also included Forest Whitaker, star of The Last King of Scotland (and, err, Danish butter commercials) and Felicity Jones, the lead actress in The Theory of Everything.

Mikkelsen’s exact role in the film has not yet been announced. Meanwhile, his run in the American television series Hannibal appears to be nearing its end. Mikkelsen was released from his contract after the show was dropped by NBC over falling ratings.

In addition to his foray into the Star Wars universe, the Danish heartthrob also recently appeared in the music video for Rihanna’s ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’ (warning, the video contains a fair amount of violence and nudity)

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ is due to hit heaters on December 16th, 2016 while ‘The Force Awakens’ will premiere on December 18th, 2015.
