After four days of searching in the Lac de Saint-Cassien lake near Cannes, divers found the body of an 11-year-old Danish boy who disappeared on the lake while riding a pedal boat.

A French police official told Danish tabloid BT that the boy’s body was found around 5pm on Thursday. The boy’s family was informed and are now being offered psychological help.

According to French media reports, the boy was riding a pedal boat with his family on the lake when he fell overboard on Monday.  A police spokesman told the French paper Var-Martin that the boy may have hit his head when he fell out of the boat.

Police said on Thursday that their search initially focused on the wrong part of the 20 to 30-metre deep lake.

“The biggest problem was finding the exact spot where the boy fell in,” Gerard Matz, the captain of the Var police force, told BT.

The Danish Foreign Ministry told BT on Thursday that the Danish Embassy in Paris is investigating the case.
