A 46-year-old priest admitted in court on Tuesday to having sexually relations with a girl who was just 12 years old at the time, TV Øst reported.

The man has been in police custody since late June and is suspected of sexually abusing several children who he met through his position as the priest at Tømmerup Church in the western Zealand town of Kalundborg.

The man admitted to having sexual intercourse and other genital contact wit the girl, who was 12 and 13 when the attacks took place.

TV Øst said that the man had also partially admitted to sexually assaulting a 12-year-old boy but denied his guilt on that charge in court on Tuesday. He is accused of having anal intercourse with the boy, offering the boy money for sexual favours and pressuring the boy to send nude photos.

Earlier this month, Mid- and West Zealand Police revealed that the man was the priest at Tømmerup Church in the hopes that additional potential victims would come forward.

“We have gotten far in our investigation […] but we suspect that there are more children whom we haven’t yet spoken with there may have been subjected to abuse in connection with their contact with the priest at Tømmerup Church,” Commissioner Ove Pedersen said at the time.

“We therefore encourage parents to talk with their children and if there is a suspicion that abuse has occurred, we would very much like to be in contact with those affected,” he added.

According to TV Øst, the 46-year-old voluntarily resigned as the church’s priest when the allegations came to light.

Broadcaster DR reported that the man was well-liked in the local community and arranged numerous summer camps and youth clubs for children in the area.
