European Youth Nordjylland is hosting a street party in Aalborg on May 9th in order to celebrate Europe Day.

“Witnessing the rise of nationalism and euroscepticism in Denmark in the past years, we think it is time to remind Danish citizens why is Europe important, and how it has affected their lives in a positive way since the 1970s,” event organizer Narcis George Matache said.

“That is why we have chosen May 9th as the date for our event. It is the day when the worst war in the history of the world finished and the day when the idea for a Peace Union has been born. And we’ve chosen to do this in the street, as we want as many people as possible to learn about this,” he added.

The event will be placed at the corner between Aalborg’s Gammel Torv and Boulevarden, and will run from 1pm to 7pm. In the event’s first two hours, there will be live music and dancers and a speech delivered by Aalborg Council member Mads Duedahl.

There will be free cake and wine, games and activities, and face painting for the children.

“We want all – young or old, woman or man – to remember the day when their lives became less dangerous and more prosperous,” Matache said.

European Youth Nordjylland is holding the EU Street Party in collaboration with Europa Movement, AIESEC Aalborg, I-Life Aalborg, DSU Aalborg, SFU Aalborg, Radikal Ungdom Aalborg, Romanian Association, 3F Union, Norresundby Sociademokraterne, Aalborg Student Radio and Orla Hav.
